Deception Point Page 80

â€Å"Do you have dogs, Dr. Harper?† He glanced up. â€Å"I'm sorry?† â€Å"I just thought it was odd. You told me that shortly after this Canadian geologist radioed in the meteorite coordinates, his sled dogs ran blindly into a crevasse?† â€Å"There was a storm. They were off course.† Gabrielle shrugged, letting her skepticism show. â€Å"Yeah†¦ okay.† Harper clearly sensed her hesitation. â€Å"What are you saying?† â€Å"I don't know. There's just a lot of coincidence surrounding this discovery. A Canadian geologist transmits meteorite coordinates on a frequency that only NASA can hear? And then his sled dogs run blindly off a cliff?† She paused. â€Å"You obviously understand that this geologist's death paved the way for this entire NASA triumph.† The color drained from Harper's face. â€Å"You think the administrator would kill over this meteorite.† Big politics. Big money, Gabrielle thought. â€Å"Let me talk to the senator and we'll be in touch. Is there a back way out of here?† Gabrielle Ashe left a pale Chris Harper and descended a fire stairwell into a deserted alley behind NASA. She flagged down a taxi that had just dropped off more NASA celebrators. â€Å"Westbrooke Place Luxury Apartments,† she told the driver. She was about to make Senator Sexton a much happier man. 94 Wondering what she had agreed to, Rachel stood near the entrance of the G4 cockpit, stretching a radio transceiver cable into the cabin so she could place her call out of earshot of the pilot. Corky and Tolland looked on. Although Rachel and NRO director William Pickering had planned to maintain radio silence until her arrival at Bollings Air Force Base outside of D.C., Rachel now had information she was certain Pickering would want to hear immediately. She had phoned his secure cellular, which he carried at all times. When William Pickering came on the line, he was all business. â€Å"Speak with care, please. I cannot guarantee this connection.† Rachel understood. Pickering's cellular, like most NRO field phones, had an indicator that detected unsecured incoming calls. Because Rachel was on a radiophone, one of the least secure communication modes available, Pickering's phone had warned him. This conversation would need to be vague. No names. No locations. â€Å"My voice is my identity,† Rachel said, using the standard field greeting in this situation. She had expected the director's response would be displeasure that she had risked contacting him, but Pickering's reaction sounded positive. â€Å"Yes, I was about to make contact with you myself. We need to redirect. I'm concerned you may have a welcoming party.† Rachel felt a sudden trepidation. Someone is watching us. She could hear the danger in Pickering's tone. Redirect. He would be pleased to know she had called to make that exact request, albeit for entirely different reasons. â€Å"The issue of authenticity,† Rachel said. â€Å"We've been discussing it. We may have a way to confirm or deny categorically.† â€Å"Excellent. There have been developments, and at least then I would have solid ground on which to proceed.† â€Å"The proof involves our making a quick stop. One of us has access to a laboratory facility-â€Å" â€Å"No exact locations, please. For your own safety.† Rachel had no intention of broadcasting her plans over this line. â€Å"Can you get us clearance to land at GAS-AC?† Pickering was silent a moment. Rachel sensed he was trying to process the word. GAS-AC was an obscure NRO gisting shorthand for the Coast Guard's Group Air Station Atlantic City. Rachel hoped the director would know it. â€Å"Yes,† he finally said. â€Å"I can arrange that. Is that your final destination?† â€Å"No. We will require further helicopter transport.† â€Å"An aircraft will be waiting.† â€Å"Thank you.† â€Å"I recommend you exercise extreme caution until we know more. Speak to no one. Your suspicions have drawn deep concern among powerful parties.† Tench, Rachel thought, wishing she had managed to make contact with the President directly. â€Å"I am currently in my car, en route to meet the woman in question. She has requested a private meeting in a neutral location. It should reveal much.† Pickering is driving somewhere to meet Tench? Whatever Tench was going to tell him must be important if she refused to tell him on the phone. Pickering said, â€Å"Do not discuss your final coordinates with anyone. And no more radio contact. Is that clear?† â€Å"Yes, sir. We'll be at GAS-AC in an hour.† â€Å"Transport will be arranged. When you reach your ultimate destination, you can call me via more secure channels.† He paused. â€Å"I cannot overstate the importance of secrecy to your safety. You have made powerful enemies tonight. Take appropriate caution.† Pickering was gone. Rachel felt tense as she closed the connection and turned to Tolland and Corky. â€Å"Change of destination?† Tolland said, looking eager for answers. Rachel nodded, feeling reluctant. â€Å"The Goya.† Corky sighed, glancing down at the meteorite sample in his hand. â€Å"I still can't imagine NASA could possibly have†¦ † He faded off, looking more worried with every passing minute. We'll know soon enough, Rachel thought. She went into the cockpit and returned the radio transceiver. Glancing out the windscreen at the rolling plateau of moonlit clouds racing beneath them, she had the unsettling feeling they were not going to like what they found onboard Tolland's ship. 95 William Pickering felt an unusual solitude as he drove his sedan down the Leesburg Highway. It was almost 2:00 A.M., and the road was empty. It had been years since he'd been driving this late. Marjorie Tench's raspy voice still grated on his mind. Meet me at the FDR Memorial. Pickering tried to recall the last time he had seen Marjorie Tench face-to-face-never a pleasant experience. It had been two months ago. At the White House. Tench was seated opposite Pickering at a long oak table surrounded by members of the National Security Council, Joint Chiefs, CIA, President Herney, and the administrator of NASA. â€Å"Gentlemen,† the head of the CIA had said, looking directly at Marjorie Tench. â€Å"Yet again, I am before you to urge this administration to confront the ongoing security crisis of NASA.† The declaration took no one in the room by surprise. NASA's security woes had become a tired issue in the intelligence community. Two days previously, more than three hundred high-resolution satellite photos from one of NASA's earth-observing satellites had been stolen by hackers out of a NASA database. The photos-inadvertently revealing a classified U.S. military training facility in North Africa-had turned up on the black market, where they had been purchased by hostile intelligence agencies in the Middle East. â€Å"Despite the best of intentions,† the CIA director said with a weary voice, â€Å"NASA continues to be a threat to national security. Simply put, our space agency is not equipped to protect the data and technologies they develop.† â€Å"I realize,† the President replied, â€Å"that there have been indiscretions. Damaging leaks. And it troubles me deeply.† He motioned across the table to the stern face of NASA administrator Lawrence Ekstrom. â€Å"We are yet again looking into ways to tighten NASA's security.† â€Å"With due respect,† the CIA director said, â€Å"whatever security changes NASA implements will be ineffective as long as NASA operations remain outside the umbrella of the United States intelligence community.† The statement brought an uneasy rustle from those assembled. Everyone knew where this was headed.

Professional Development Plan Essay

In order to develop a plan that will address the characteristics of my group and me as a leader; a thorough review of the completed DISC assessments much be completed on an individual basis and an overall plan can be derived thereafter. The individual analyses are as follows: Individual Assessments Jeremy Conner, Jessica Mills, and Brian Tuck are all predominately categorized as cautious in style. Their tendencies include: being tense with themselves and others when under pressure, having a natural curiosity about people, being concerned about what people think, feel, and expect, having strong attachments to their personal interests, underestimating the time required to complete tasks, being intuitive and observant about situations and people, associating their self-worth with their work, and being intrigued by concepts, ideas and processes. They are known as the assessors and tend to have strong opinions about people and groups with whom you do not identify or agree. Robert Mills was predominately categorized as interactive in style. This style’s strengths include: enthusiasm, charm, persuasiveness, and warmth. The cautious style is gifted in people skills and communication skills with individuals as well as groups. They are great influencer’s. They are idea-people and dreamers who excel at getting others excited about their vision. They are optimist with an abundance of charisma. All of these qualities help them influence people and build alliances to accomplish their goals. I was predominately categorized as a dominance style. My primary motivation is accomplishing bigger and better goals according to an internal timetable. I prefer to be involved in my chosen activities from start to finish, and I  resist people who are obstacles to my achievements. My tendencies include: disliking being told what to do, or when and how to do something, being reluctant to change what I think or how I feel, delegating tasks only if absolutely necessary, acting competitively, especially when pushing myself to new levels or in new directions, making sure that production is completed on schedule, depending on plans for action and follow-up routines, and becoming tenacious and focused when under pressure. Team Development Plan Based on the analysis of the DISC assessments, I would put myself in a leadership role on the team with Robert as my supervisor, and Jeremy, Jessica, and Brian as subordinates. My style is more fit to a leadership role due to my desire to accomplish bigger and better goals. This desire allows me to look bigger picture which must be done from an upper management perspective in order to keep the company ahead of the curve in all aspects of business to avoid pitfalls. Robert’s natural charisma and persuasiveness would make him great at motivating the rest of the team. This does not mean that Jeremy, Jessica, and Bryan aren’t just as important to the team success. All workers from top to bottom are needed for a business to be successful. I strongly believe in the phrase â€Å"you are only as good as your weakest member†. For this reason, I would make sure that they were given a chance to air their grievances and make suggestions on changes that should be made. I must make sure to allow every team member to have a say in the business processes because this is a weak point of my particular style. Flexibility on my part must be a focal point to ensure that all team members feel heard and feel like they hold value in the company. Conclusion All of the information in the above plan will be closely monitored and periodic meetings will take place to allow time for all employees to voice their grievances or concerns to ensure that full compliance is being achieved. It is very important that regular monitoring is performed to ensure that the company stays on track and will help ensure the long-term success of the company. Realizing each individual’s style as well as their strengths and weaknesses will allow a more personal and individualized  approach to be taken in regards to team dynamics and goal attainment. Disintermediation - Essay Example This direct interaction between the buyers and sellers was perceived to be free from any intermediation of third party firms i.e. middlemen as technology greatly reduced the cost of searching the information regarding the buyers and sellers lessening the dependence on the middlemen. This virtual absence of middlemen kick started the process of disintermediation and it was largely believed that with advances in e-Commerce, disintermediation will increase and will result into the reduction of cost of searching the information. However, the same seem not to be happening as despite improvements in the technology and whole e-Commerce process, disintermediation did not took place as expected. This work will look into exploring the reasons behind this perceived disintermediation and e-Commerce and why it did not took place despite the bright future of doing business electronically was promised by the e-Commerce. Opposing Totalitarianism Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Opposing Totalitarianism - Essay Example It also puts individuality into question, as well as standards and principles of morality and humanity. If a state wishes to regulate public life, then by all means, but a private life is just that: private. Each person is entitled to running and living their lives in the ways that they see fit and should not have to answer to another party in regards to it. Totalitarianism violates a person’s right to live as they want to. If they are under constant surveillance, then they are unable to act in the ways that they feel are appropriate for them. They are punished if they â€Å"misbehave,† or act in any other way than the one set down by the state. They must abide by the rules that are set for everyone; nobody is an exception to what the state decides upon, and there is no point in trying to reason with the state. The methods used to keep the citizens in check are immoral and cruel. Mass media is controlled for the sole purpose of controlling the citizens. It has long since been figured out that people are very influenced by what they see in the media, and the state uses this to their advantage. The state also monitors the media that is made public – certain genres and mediums are unacceptable in some areas, and everyone must abide by those wishes. This violates freedom of expression, as well as freedom of speech. The same applies to the methods of restricting free discussion and criticism. Citizens are being forced to keep quiet about how they feel. The use of terror tactics and mass surveillance takes things too far when it comes to keeping people under control. Attempts are taken to an entirely new level when threats and constant surveillance are sought to tend to citizens. People are frightened into living in ways that the majority of them want nothing to do with. With surveillance as constant as it could be, these people have very little chance of â€Å"acting out.† The most well-known

Economic Growth in the UK Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Economic Growth in the UK - Essay Example Since the phenomenon of globalization has become ubiquitous in the new neoliberal world order of the last few decades, it would be instructive to study aforementioned determinants within the framework of international capitalism. This particular form of capitalism has steadily replaced socialistic and communistic forms of economic arrangement in many countries in the world. While proponents of this global economic model argue that this is the best possible system, there are also those who strongly oppose various aspects of this system. Taking a historical perspective, we see that the events of the two centuries are shaped and defined by the practice of capitalism. While conceding that concentrations of power and finance in and of themselves do not lead to oppression and injustice, empirical evidence of the workings of the capitalist model suggests such an outcome. Similarly, while neoliberal economic paradigm might have improved the Gross National Products (including that of the UK) of individual nations and improved the general standards of living, there are other aspects of human well-being that is not easily measured and fulfilled (Dixon, 1998, p.125). For instance, when assessing economic systems and determinants of economic growth, it is only logical to consider the consequences to the environment alongside measures of human standard of living. There is an emerging consensus among intellectuals and research scholars that there is indeed a strong correlation between the two concepts.

Early Greek,Roman,and Christian Historiography Essay

Early Greek,Roman, and Christian Historiography - Essay Example To this extent, it is important to note that the writing of pre-modern history, often known as historiography, involved early historiographers writing about various civilizations that existed at their lifetime and even beyond (Bispham, Harrison, & Sparkes, 2006). In this regard, it is worthy to note that some of the major civilizations that the historiographers documented included the early Greek, Roman, and Christian civilizations. Due to the diversity of these civilizations, many historiographers adopted different approaches in pursuing the history of such civilizations (Mehl, 2005). This paper therefore, compares and contrasts the various approaches to the historical inquiry pursued by Greek, Roman, and Christian historians. Essentially, the early Christian Historiography incorporated a number of approaches that were unique to the civilization, as the historiographers at the time (Osborne, 2004). Perhaps it is important to commence by noting that all the Christian Historical materials must bear apocalyptic, universal necessity, and periodical significance, according to the Christian principles (Bispham, Harrison, & Sparkes, 2006).. Certainly, Christian historiographers take the approach of universal necessity in the sense that they attempt to describe the history of the world from the creation of man to the latest events in the Christian history (Marincola, 2010). This means that Christian historiography only goes to the universal extent of seeking the origin of the races and distribution patterns of such races. On the contrary, the Greco-Roman historiographers take a slightly different approach in the sense that it is more particular in describing the history of civilizations (Mehl, 2005). Instead of d escribing how civilizations and powers rose and fell, the Greco-Roman historiographers describe Greece and Rome as the nerve centres of all historical revolution. On the other hand, the Christian

The Borzoi College Reader, Seventh Edition Essay

The Borzoi College Reader, Seventh Edition - Essay Example As matter of fact, the multiple reasons of immigration, assumed to be as many as the immigrants themselves, fall under similar themes that determine the immigrant’s life and how they are treated by the natives. Poverty has triggered a significant percentage of immigration. The poor move from places with low endowment of resource to seek better life’s in other places. However, no matter how promising these new places are, they don’t guarantee immigrants full satisfaction. Immigrants have continued to live filthy lives despite being in high status location. Mankind has developed a capitalistic nature, with every individual struggling to maximize his self-satisfaction. Literally, no one cares about the immigrants but instead take advantage of their vulnerability to attain self-development. Native humiliate immigrants; enslave them following the fact that, they are their financial supporters. This mistreatment corrupts he immigrants mind, creating a negative attitude towards the new environment. Racism in US has evolved, developed and even worsened due to immigration of black Africans to the whites’ territories in search for better hosting. The intercultural interaction br ings confusion, the definition of satisfaction is altered and hence most immigrants have remained in these cruel and anti-social environments so long as they receive some financial compensation. Good life, fair treatment and kindness and other social norms are no longer a priority and immigrants adapt cruelty. To quote â€Å"if we lived in Canada we could play outdoors every day in the sun†¦ sun is bad for you. Everything our parents said was good is bad†(298). Regions differ, socially and economically. Economic and social reasons significantly influence immigration. People move to acquire better healthcare, better education, and access auxiliary services as well security. The impact is

CBRN Chemical Biological Radiological Nuclear weapons Essay

CBRN Chemical Biological Radiological Nuclear weapons - Essay Example In the modern context, political instability is a serious problem because one cannot expect an unstable state to be responsible towards humanity. Comparing with nuclear weapons, radiological weapons are with less capacity to create severe damage. To be specific, this sort of weapons is generally used to create chaos among the mass. Within this scenario, world nations suspect that notorious terrorist organizations may make use of this weapon to intimidate humanity. For instance, the Padilla case (2002) proves that terrorist groups have worldwide network and are strong enough to use radiological weapons. To be specific, the government suspected that Padilla may involve in jihad because he is trained to handle radiological weapons. Besides, this person is closely related to the leadership within Al-Qaeda. So, the Padilla case proves that terrorist groups may make use of civilians to handle radioactive weapons. In my opinion, Al-Qaeda possesses economic capability to plot and conduct a severe attack using radiological weapon. Shane (2010) states that, â€Å"Al Qaeda is on the march again, targeting the country from within and without, and your hapless government cannot protect you† (p. A1). To be specific, the revenue from oil trade in the Middle East supports Al-Qaeda. So, one can see that economic capability is not a serious problem for the terrorist organizations. On the other side, the former satellite nations related to Russia (USSR) may have weapons (say, nuclear) and the terrorist organizations can easily influence these nations. Besides, the terrorist organizations make use of religious ideology to attract individuals who live in U.S. and other western nations. Mendelsohn (2009) states that, â€Å"Al Qaeda has never disguised its desire to acquire weapons of mass destruction, including nuclear capabilities† (p.77). So, I rate the threat of radiological weapons as high risk because

Alcohol Advertisement in Australia Essay Example for Free

Alcohol Advertisement in Australia Essay Alcohol advertising in Australia ignores the long-term and short-term health risks associated with excessive alcohol consumption; these are detrimental to the Australian population of all ages, therefore they should be banned. Alcohol advertising is the promotion of alcoholic beverages by alcohol companies through a range of different media. Alcohol advertising is one of the most closely regulated forms of advertising, along with tobacco. The self-regulation system in Australia is not effective at protecting children and youth from exposure to alcohol advertising, a great deal of which contains material appealing to these groups (Fielder, Donovan Ouschan 2009). The Alcoholic Beverages Advertising Code was introduced to guarantee that alcohol advertising will be conducted in a way that encourages responsibility and moderation in liquor merchandising and consumption, and does not promote the consumption of alcoholic beverages by underage persons. The Alcoholic Beverages Advertising Code first introduced in 1998 is the regulatory system for alcohol advertisement in Australia. For advertisement to comply with this code it is assessed to whom the advertisement is directed, and whom the advertisement may possibly be communicated. Australians’ consumption of alcohol is large on a global scale, with consumption estimated at 9. 88 litres per capita in 2007 (National Preventative Health Taskforce 2009). Scientific research has revealed, over decades, that there is a correlation between alcohol advertising and the consumption of alcohol. However, it has not yet been proven that alcohol advertising causes higher consumption (Hanson, 2011). It is the Alcohol Companies aim to demonstrate that the alcohol campaigns effectively increase their potential market share and brand loyalty, and not higher alcohol consumption. Adolescences are exposed to alcohol advertisements through many different forms of media, and can result in the consumption of alcoholic beverages. A study has shown that alcoholic beverages are the most advertised product inside a 250 metre radius of primary schools and children are exposed up to 25 advertisements for alcohol per square kilometre (Australian and New Zealand Journal of Public Health 2008). The alcohol industry lack credibility in the argument about banning alcohol advertising, given their dire attempts at enforcing their own self-regulatory code (the Alcohol Beverages Advertising Code). Children’s exposure to alcohol advertisement is on a daily basis. The advertisement of alcohol and alcohol products is not adequately regulated to restrict youths viewing alcohol-related images and messages. Research has shows that underage children are frequently shown alcohol advertising (Fielder, Donovan Ouschan 2009). Mounting evidence has revealed, for youths, the increasing pressure of alcohol marketing creates negative attitudes towards alcohol consumption, and significantly impacts their decision to drink, as well as how they drink (National Preventative Health Taskforce 2009). Underage drinking can cause youth’s brains to be extremely damaged from alcohol. Large alcohol exposure to the developing youth’s brain can be very dangerous. Adolescents are shown to be more susceptible to the learning and memory difficulties that can arise from alcohol consumption. Sections of the brain that are affected by alcohol are directly correlated with memory and emotions, and binge drinking could produce memory problems, problems with verbal skills, incapacity to learn and depression. The existing regulatory system does not effectively regulate these exposures, and does not attempt to decrease or abolish the appeal of the advertising content. The 30 highest viewed alcohol advertisements to the underage population included at least one component identified to appeal to children and underage youth, with 23 found to contain two or more such material. It was also found that 15 of the 30 advertisements contained an animal (Fielder, Donovan Ouschan 2009). The self-regulation system in Australia fails to safe-guard children and youth from exposure to alcohol advertising, with a good majority containing elements appealing to youths. The advertising companies’ target audience of their advertising campaigns have changed, with various brands being targeted towards a particular population. Some drinks are typically seen as a masculine drink, predominantly beers and dark spirits, whilst wines and cocktails are seen as feminine. Brands have said to be specifically produced to appeal to a population that would not generally drink that kind of alcoholic beverage. The alcohol industry has come under criticism and restricted legislation in their alleged targeting of young people, with the creation of alcoholic beverages that are sweet-tasting and bright coloured which appeal to the younger population. However, there is no solid evidence that supports this alleged targeting of youths. There have been wide spread debate on whether alcohol advertisements are targeting the teenage population, although alcohol advertisement makes consumption look extremely exciting and enjoyable with a majority of which involve parties. Exposure to alcohol advertisements is a daily occasion; they are on television, radio, billboards, concerts, magazines and sporting events. If alcohol advertising was to be banned there would be a certain objection from alcohol companies, outlets, sporting bodies and association. Alcohol is a major sponsor within Australian sports and is estimated to be worth $1. 25 billion a year. Large quantities of alcohol consumption are linked to severe public and social health problems involving violence, crime, road accidents and disease. With the taxing of premixed drinks there is intent to address the problem, however this has not made much of a difference, with adolescence moving onto different forms of alcohol. With the alcohol advertisement nearly everywhere and binge drinking within the teenage population still prevalent, the self-regulatory systems set up at present are not adequate. Heavy alcohol consumption has become a part of Australian culture; advertisement is encouraging these trends, and should be banned. Effect of Bilingualism on Ageing and the Brain

Effect of Bilingualism on Ageing and the Brain Nur’Aisyah Binte Yussof In Wiley’s journal article, he states that speaking two languages benefits the aging brain. He presents his ideas, arguments and analysis with supporting evidence from epidemiological study by Dr. Bak and colleagues from the Centre for Cognitive Aging and Cognitive Epidemiology at the University of Edinburgh. This critical review will examine another three different articles on this issue and would evaluate its contents based on the assumption from Wiley’s article. Although Wiley had proven his point, his article might be biased and contains some misinterpretation of data coming from only one source of research to prove his point that bilingualism benefits the aging brain. Thus, the other research studies to support his ideology. In the first paragraph of Wiley’s journal article, he stated that â€Å"bilingualism is thought to improve cognition and delay dementia in older adults.† This conclusion is based on the data from the study of the Lothian Birth Cohort 1936 undertaken by The University of Edinburgh Centre for Cognitive Ageing and Cognitive Epidemiology, part of the cross council Lifelong Health and Wellbeing Initiative (MR/K026992/1). The results from this study indicate that those who spoke two or more languages had significantly better cognitive abilities compared to what would be expected from their baseline. Wiley, as supported by the research study determines that bilingualism has a positive effect on cognition and may slow down cognitive decline from aging. The research done proved that acquiring a second language, even as an adult may benefit the aging brain. Bilingualism allows the brain to respond more rapidly to the conditions that placed greater demands on the working memory. Stagnant use of the brain; monolinguals, would result in the brain to slow down and be more prone to effects of aging. Cognitive abilities are better when the language sphere is used more often thus, increasing the rate of brain functions. Distinguished Professor of Psychology from Penn State; Judith Kroll stated that â€Å"Bilingual speakers can outperform monolinguals (people who speak only one language) in certain mental abilities, such as editing out irrelevant information and focusing on important information.† Bilingual speakers may benefit and perform better in tasks such as multi-tasking and also have an advantage in attention and cognitive control which will have long-term benefits. Increasing use of these systems slows down aging and also deters sickness such as dementia and also Alzheimer’s. These three articles from Ellen Bialystok, American Academy of Neurology and Universtat Jaume I, acknowledged the fact that bilingualism benefits the aging brain. In the book from Ellen Bialystok; Bilingualism in development: language, literacy and cognition, she explained that bilingualism involves language proficiency which consisted of two cognitive processes, analysis of representational structure and control of attention. These cognitive processes would determine proficiency through the degree of involvement and mental representations that refers to the process of explicit structure and organization of information represented with knowledge. â€Å"Language proficiency is the ability to function in a situation that is defined by specific cognitive and linguistic demands, to a level of performance indicated by either objective criteria or normative standards.† The journal article by the American Academy of Neurology (AAN) states that: â€Å"Speaking more than one language is thought to lead better development of areas of the brain that handle executive functions and attention tasks, which may help protect from the onset of dementia†. In addition, the journal article from Universitat Jaume I states that, bilinguals use the left inferior frontal lobe, the Brocas area, to respond to stimuli where executive functions are performed (such as ordering forms by colour or shape), whereas monolinguals use the right part to respond to the same stimuli.Findings are very important because they show an unknown aspect of bilingualism, which goes beyond linguistic advantages, and they also show bilinguals are more effective in responding to certain stimuli, explains researcher Cesar Avila, who ensures the research shows that bilingualism does not only have effects on the brain at a linguistic level, but that it also works differently, emphasizing the importance of introducing languages at an early age because it generates cognitive benefits. All of these sources, with supporting evidence links back to the main article that we studied, whereby it is strongly believed that bilingualism would benefit the aging brain. These articles contain similar arguments about how language and use of cognitive process are inter-related. With the brain performing cognitive processes while a bilingual person speaks, it would increase brain activities which in turn would benefit aging brain to not be vulnerable to sickness such as dementia or Alzheimer’s disease due to frequent activities in the brain. In an American Academy of Neurology study, stagnant use of brain, such as monolinguals, would increase the risk of one developing a sickness four and a half years before bilinguals. Although believed that bilingualism will benefit the aging brain, cognitive functions due bilingualism, that slow down due to aging can be fine tuned and maintained in other ways as well. It is measured by the efficiency level of our brain as we age. For example, being physically active produces positive effects on many cognitive functions, such as memory, attention, information processing and problem solving. Cognitive abilities in an aging brain could still be active as it was in the youth through spatial attention which is critical in many aspects of our daily lives. According to the research from Dr Joanna Brooks, certain types of cognitive systems in the right cerebral hemisphere, are encapsulated and may be protected from aging. Thus, bilingualism would not be the only factor that would benefit the aging brain. This critical review examines the findings of Wiley and a few other research studies to determine if bilingualism would benefit the aging brain. Being supported by most studies, Wiley’s statement is credible. However, bilingualism, being the only factor would not be strong enough to benefit the aging brain. Cognitive abilities, such as the biologically organized mental structure in the brain known as the Language Acquisition Device facilitates the learning of a language and allows the rapid cognitive activity which will also benefit the aging brain. Wiley’s article misleads readers and focuses attention only on bilingualism while ignoring other factors that will also affect or benefit the aging brain. 1029 words. Difficulties discussing patient sexual health

Difficulties discussing patient sexual health Hesitancy In Taking History From A Female Client Sexuality assessment and counseling are part of the nurse’s professional role, but only few nurses integrate this awareness into practice in a proper way. Getting a sexual history is an inbuilt piece of the client meeting, however, numerous health care professionals neglect to address this subject with their clients. This could be credited to distress that numerous healthcare professionals may have with the subject (Shukla, Yourchock Coutcher, 2013). During my community rotation of reproductive health at Salimabad colony, the family I was assigned to was a 4 membered family living in 2 adjacent apartments with 4 bedrooms. Only one lady was at home with whom I conducted my interview. She was the mother of 3 daughters. I started with the general components of history, such as information about their family members, their education, and their health status etc. She was responding to my questions in a decent manner without any hesitation. After that I asked the client about the problems related to her reproductive health. Her reply was pretty awkward. She replied that I don’t know how to explain it to you because you are a male student. I felt very uncomfortable with her reply that I didn’t even try to intervene in between and explore more about her concerns. At the time of the incident I felt terrible and disregarded. I found the response of the client very bizarre. I also felt helpless because at that time I was not able to figure out that what I should say to the client to make her comfortable. In the wake of confronting the dismissal from the patient, numerous questions popped into my brain. First and foremost, what made the client so uncomfortable? After all I told her that the information won’t be disclosed to an irrelevant person. Secondly, why did I hesitate to intervene to make the client comfortable? Moreover, why didn’t the client realize that I was there to help her? If she’d tell me about her problems than I could’ve guided her about the solutions. I reflected and analyzed the possible causes because of which the incident occurred. According to Magnan, Reynolds Galvin (2005), various hindrances exist to consolidating thought of patient sexuality into nursing practice, including individual, institutional, patient-related variables and Personal elements, for example, nurses’ attitudes about sexuality and sexual behavior. There are a lot of barriers concerning poor healthcare like, social, religious, cultural and economic. Among these socio-cultural is the most crucial. In a developing country like Pakistan, the culture and religion have more significance than any other aspect of life. According to Walston (2005), Involving men in reproductive health is particularly challenging in countries whose culturally defined gender roles may hinder men’s participation. For establishing an effective and therapeutic communication, it is necessary for a healthcare professional to overcome these barriers. To overcome these issues, the healthcare professional shouldn’t be hesitant while taking the history about reproductive health. According to Jayasuriya Dennick (2011), there are many barriers within the learner. The first and the foremost is the deficiency of knowledge. A few students omit a sexual history in light of the fact that they dont comprehend its applicability to a specific clinical situation. It is less demanding to ask an intrusive question if one comprehends the pertinence of the inquiry and is thus ready to advocate it – both to oneself and to the client. The second barrier within the learner is problems with terminology. In sexual history-taking, students may be confronted with vocabulary or behavior with which they are unfamiliar. According to Jayasuriya Dennick (2011), students may be hesitant to seek clarification, particularly where sexual activity is concerned, for fear of appearing sexually inexperienced, or unversed in sexual behavior. The third barrier is the concern about patient’s perception of student. Students some of the time express worry about picking up clients trust or bringing on offense by their inquiries (Jayasuriya Dennick 2011). The other set of barriers is barriers within the learning environment. The most significant barrier of this set is cultural barriers. According to Jayasuriya Dennick (2011), in some cultures, sex is allied by shame. This feeling of taboo penetrates into medical culture as well. Indeed, healthcare professionals who do talk about sexual wellbeing may limit themselves to medical’ issues such as infections, while evading issues relating to sexual lifestyle. While reflecting on my role, I realized that I shouldn’t have kept quiet. I shouldn’t have hesitated and should’ve intervened and said something to make the client comfortable. I should’ve shown professionalism which might have helped the client understand and realize the purpose of taking the sexual history. If I encounter similar situations in the future, I’ll try not to hesitate and along with that I’ll try to make the patient comfortable by telling her the significance of taking the reproductive health history. After studying the literature now I know that for an effective communication, health care providers should respect the feelings, sexual values, lifestyle and social norms and limitations of the client. And they should have the current knowledge about regarding sexual health. In addition, talking about reproductive health can be difficult for clients and health care providers as well, but continuous practicing and use of effective skills can promote communication and it will also help to ensure the best possible care (Association of reproductive health professionals April, 2008). As we know that students learn a lot from clinical experiences so for that purpose, students could watch a specialist take a sexual history from a client or they could watch a video of the same methodology or they could partake in a role-play activity (Jayasuriya Dennick 2011). In conclusion, involvement of male in reproductive health is also necessary as female health care providers to promote a healthy sexual life. Male involvement in reproductive health can be achieved through the use of effective therapeutic communication skills, training and practice, current knowledge regarding reproductive health so that a better role can be played as a nurse. Distance Learning vs. Traditional Education Essay examples -- E-Learni

Teachers expect students to abide by certain rules set forth at the beginning of the classes they attend. Preparation of materials and participation in class discussions are some of the requirements for classes. The rules of each class differ by subject and teacher. In the past decade another variable has been thrown into the pot, the environment in which classes are taught. Classroom rules may have to change to accommodate virtual classrooms. Ellen Laird has been teaching via the internet for many years. Ellen teaches the same courses in the classroom and online and she has written about her experiences with distance learning, also known as e-Learning, or online learning. In reference to the difference between the two types of classes she writes, â€Å"The two experiences are as different as a wedding reception and a rave† (Laird). With the growing popularity of distance education the question in many people’s minds is, â€Å"Do online classes and traditional classes have the same standards?† Since both types of courses are held in different environments, there are many difficulties that arise in holding each to the same standard. Given the same classes, students seem to be guided by different standards based on the environment that they are in, Internet or classroom. The standards implemented in distance education are very different from those that are expected of students taking courses in class. The difference in standards all stem from the medium used in the classroom. The standards set for students in distance education go above and beyond what their peers in class are expected to do. Higher standards imposed by distance education require more work from students and teachers, more interaction among classmates, and less contact and... ...mobility? Dec 2012. LookSmart. Glass Ceiling :: essays research papers

Glass Ceiling Women hold just 9 per cent of executive positions in Australia – Candy Tymson Gender Differences It is commonly argued that female and males are very different with respect to their personal characteristics, such as motivational issues and experience. (Liebermale, 2002) Even when female and males have the same characteristics, there is still some difference with respect to their behaviour and the outcome of their activities. Men recognize that what they say to a female is either heard or reacted to differently than expected. Men find themselves thinking carefully about how to approach an issue or how to speak, thereby removing rapport building from the relationship with a female. Because female are more relationship oriented, they tend to lead by consensus. Men tend to be more hierarchical and include only the people closest to them at their level in the decision making process. When females have to make a decision they will often process and look at options out loud while men tend to process internally until they come up with a solution. Females often think that the male is being unresponsive to suggestions because of this and men often think that females are looking for approval when they process out loud or that they don't know what they are doing. Some men think that a female's way of processing is a sign of weakness. Communication Styles. In non-verbal behaviour females will nod their head to show that they are listening. Men leave the conversation thinking that a head nod means agreement and will be surprised to find out that the female didn't agree at all. When a female is speaking to a male and he does not say anything and stays in a neutral body language to show that he is listening, a female will interpret that as the male being bored or not understanding what she is saying.

Benefits of Leisure Essay

‘All work and no play, makes Jack a dull boy’ – something we were taught in kindergarten, but something we forgot along the way. Although we are all aware of the need and benefits of leisure, it’s not until something seriously goes wrong with our health or relationships that we start thinking about it. The importance of leisure has been so vividly understood, that companies and organization’s are slowly beginning to regulate overtime and over-working, and are encouraging employees to take time off during weekends and holidays. They no longer encourage late-nights, but instead prefer their employees to check-in and check-out at the correct timings and work more productively during office hours. So, what has caused this change? To understand that, let’s look at some of the major benefits of leisure. 1. Healthier and longer life: The health benefits of leisure are well-known. People use their leisure time to engage in activities that include both exercises as well as other stress-relieving recreational activities. Exercises provide a lot of health benefits such as cardiovascular benefits, reducing cholesterol and hypertension, improving spinal and neurological problems, increasing bone mass and muscles, increasing lung capacity, and improving overall wellness. Entertainment activities also has its share of benefits by relieving stress, reducing tension, soothing mind and body, bringing about positive changes in attitude, and improving social communication and interaction. These psychological changes also impact physical health in a positive manner. 2. Economic benefits: If you need to exercise or relax, you need the time, space, and opportunity to do so. The places of recreation are unlimited these days. It is a complete industry in itself like the hospitality industry. Leisure and fun-time activities are a big-time business today. Whether it is the play station and play areas at the malls and cinemas, or the resorts where you just spend your weekend, all are intended to ensure you enjoy and relax yourself. And while you relax there are others working around to ensure you get the complete benefit of a holiday. And all this simply means that there is a whole new world of job and business opportunities. Travel and tourism is believed to generate more money flow and income within and between countries. It generates more income than even the agriculture and automobile industries. 3. Better society: Leisure has lots of social benefits that are not easily noticed or widely advertised, but make a significant difference to the society. A work-oriented society will not find many opportunities for the growth of art, culture, and sports. Leisure is what provides the opportunities for the growth of these activities. Recreational activities also encourage tourism and that in turn promotes awareness of culture and history. 4. Strengthens family bonds: Leisure not only promotes the creation of a better society but also promotes the bonds of family ties. Setting aside time for recreation ensures that you spend more time with family, especially the special people in the family like the elderly and little children. Spending time with family and friends strengthens relationships and thereby strengthens the society as a whole. This integration brings about social cohesion and adds more meaning to life. 5. Protects environment: Although in an indirect manner, leisure also contributes to the protection of the environment. The need to create recreational places compels people to look into maintaining a clean and green environment. This leads to the maintenance and protection of the environment from harmful elements. Be it our local park or the forest resorts that we enjoyed our holidays in, all these in their own little way contribute toward a greener environment. Thus, leisure is essential not only to ensure a healthy body, an active mind, and strong relationships; but in its own way, it also contributes to a better economy and a better environment. benefits of leisure.

Organizational culture that affects aviation accidents

Edward P. Warner said, The modern chargeplane is the crossing of a program of research, development and tad in detail that no opposite structure or mechanism has invariably matched. The results run through been so remarkable that thither is always danger of forgetting that these extraordinary finesse still have to be ope measured by men, and that the most important test they have to meet is still that of being usable without imposing unreasonable demands or inessential strains on the flight personnel (quoted in Billings, 1997).It is imperative to mention the significance of tender-hearted and mechanism interactions when dealing with an air arranging. An organisational structure determines how a system performs as it involves the mindset, the values and the goals of a group. The macrocosm argon the wizs that control and mathematical function the machines and they be the ones who run short and participate in a specialized organizational culture.Even if the aviation sy stem is considered one of the most applied science-intensive, spatially distributed system, the force that operates and manages the functions of the system still depend upon the human prod force (Billings 1997, p. 3). This system operates to move passengers and burden from one location to another with the enjoyment of highly complex and automated machines.Technology has never been utilized and maximized more effectively in any other effort than the aviation enterprise and it remains to be an industry to promote the advance of such technology for best safety and higher console for the passengers (Billings 1997, p. 3).Automation of the airline industry revealed subtle tho existing assumptions that machines would soon replace earth in the workplace (Billings 1997, p. 201). A better perspective would be that humans and machines are complementary rather that competitive of all(prenominal) other (Billings 1997, p. 201).The rising dependence for machine was seen to be a major wo rk out that shapes the culture of the aviation industry. As machines could do more of what a pilot and air traffic control officer does, sometimes at a higher rate of efficiency, air carriers have moved to use automations more than ever. However, there were questions as to the mark of control humans have all over the operation (Billings 1997, p. 206). It is important to note that at present machines cannot completely replace humans in their functions as checklists required in the lead and during the flight cannot be solely cultured by some machine (Billings 1997, p. 207).

Plot V Style – Therese Raquin

Though books, like only art forms, is subjective, people never hesitate to reassessment it as if their word were final. Book critics usually like novels which cleverly encompass all aspects of literature. This includes diagram and path, just now also an array of other aspects. However, if unrivalled were to prioritize, would elan and language trump bandage? It all depends on themes. For example, Emile Zola, while writing T presentse Raquin which focuses on kind air in a psychological novel, might throw away emphasis on patch to get his usher across. But if his language is faulty, his style ambiguous indeed depart the commentator truly understand Zolas intentions? Style in a novel is the powers technique, such as his diction or syntax. However, because the version of the concur being investigated is a translation, we mustnt look too far into diction. But style also sets the eminence of the chapter, paragraph, and the entire novel. Therese Raquin may sport a kille r plot, but whoremaster the reader really understand the novel if they can non identify the woodland? From the very beginning, we can identify the aroma as bleak and depressive, when Zola is describing Rue Du Pont Neuf at the very first gear rapscallion, and writes This arcade is some thirty paces long and no more than two wide it is paved with chickenhearted flagstones, worn, uneven, permanently exuding an acrid-smelling damp, and is covered by a square glass roof black with grime. One can immediately identify the morbid tone in this passage. If Zola were to write the arcade is long and narrow, with flagstones and a rather dirty glass roof no attribute of tone could be interpreted, or if it could, it would be one far from that of which Zola intended.Similarly, toward the end of the guard on page 166, when Madame Raquin, paralysed and weak, attempts to denounce Laurent and Thereses actions to the guests, Zola described the lovers reaction Therese could not speak she, like Laurent, had followed the paralytic womans extreme efforts and was now staring at her hand, scrap white in the harsh lamplight, an avenging hand that was closely to speak. The two murderers waited, holding their breath. The description of the hand and lyric like harsh and avenging describe this fearful tone of the situation. To understand Thereses emotions at that time, the tone proves to be very important. Authors like Zola write in the way that they do for very specific reasons. Maybe plot is more important simply because modern readers tire outt care for style They want what happens here and now, which satisfies them enough. But for the more exploratory reader, style is to be valued just as much, as they will be looking to fully understand the schoolbook and come out of it with their aver interpretation of express work. Style in this particular novel conveys the tone to the reader, which is essential to understanding Zolas criticism of gentlemans gentleman nature. The plo t in Therese Raquin is of Thereses monotonous and suffocative life, which gets flipped and turned upside down by the r each(prenominal)ing of Laurent. The plot of the story is a very refined veil for Zolas intentions. However, this plot fits very specifically to his intentions. This is of course to be expected, but when judging the splendor of plot, we must decide how important the plot of this book is to get Zolas message across. As express in the preface to the second edition, Zola states that In Therese Raquin my groom has been to study temperaments, not characters. That is the whole render of the book. I have chosen people completely prevail by their nerves and blood, without free will, drawn into each other action of their lives by the inexorable laws of their corporal nature. Zola intended to focus on the iv humors, and associating them to the quad main characters. He states that his objective has been first and firstly a scientific one. His study of these four ch aracters involves aspect them problems, as if they were animals. Therefore, based on Zolas own words, one must come to the conclusion that the plot is as important as anything. He claims nought that Therese and Laurent did was of their own free will. In fact, they were needs, consequences or a simple organic disorder. As Zola puts it, Therese and Laurent are human animals, nothing more. This plot was written very intently with the purpose of communicating Zolas experiment to the world. Anything else he writes is an extra, as the plot is the main focal point in this novel, as it is a study of the four temperaments. When considering Therese Raquin, one must come to the conclusion that without this pick out plot, Zolas study does not arrive at the same result. The plot is absolutely essential, but that is because his book is more than just a novel. Modern literature is more focused on providing entertainment for the reader. This novel, and many another(prenominal) like it, is a stud y into human nature, which uses this plot as a means of communicating it. This does not completely disregard any contribution from the style. It is quiet down a very important factor in the novel, and all literary works. Despite this, based on Emile Zolas Therese Raquin, the conclusion is that plot is more valued than style.
